A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile, effective immediately, Thursday, October 8, at 6:56 AM CDT. This warning indicates an extreme and immediate threat, with life-threatening storm surge possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning.
Residents in surge-prone areas should prepare for potential inundation of 4-7 feet above ground and are urged to complete evacuation efforts immediately. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave to avoid being cut off from emergency services. Extensive impacts are anticipated, including structural damage, roads washing out, and severe beach erosion.
Peak winds of 45-55 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. Life-threatening winds of equivalent CAT 1 or 2 hurricane force are possible. Extensive damage to roofs, mobile homes, trees, and widespread power outages are likely. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 4-8 inches of rain expected, leading to potential major flooding. Heed all flood watches and warnings. The NWS also forecasts a favorable situation for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Be prepared to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
