Okaloosa Coastal Areas, FL - An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL this morning, October 9, at 6:53 AM CDT. This warning is immediate and critical, advising residents to take action now.

Life-threatening storm surge of 6-9 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. All ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Residents in surge-prone areas must remain sheltered in a safe location and not venture outside. If necessary, move to upper floors to escape rising water.

Hurricane-force winds, with peak gusts up to 105 mph, are expected from early this afternoon until this evening. The NWS advises planning for life-threatening winds equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane. Last-minute efforts should focus solely on protecting life. Shelter from life-threatening wind now.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 4-8 inches of rain possible, leading to potential major flooding. Numerous tornadoes are possible, and residents should stay informed and move to the safest place within their shelter if a tornado warning is issued.

The NWS warning is effective immediately and expires today, October 9, at 3:00 PM UTC (10:00 AM CDT).
