Residents in the Northern Wasatch Front, Salt Lake Valley, Wasatch Back, and Wasatch Mountains I-80 North areas should seek immediate shelter indoors due to a strong thunderstorm moving through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Salt Lake City issued a Special Weather Statement at 3:25 PM MDT, effective until 4:00 PM MDT today, October 10, 2026.

Doppler radar at 3:25 PM MDT indicated a strong thunderstorm directly over Salt Lake City, tracking northeast at 45 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 to 55 mph and pea-sized hail. The NWS warns that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects, with minor damage possible.

Locations impacted include Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Bountiful, Morgan, South Salt Lake, North Salt Lake, Centerville, Woods Cross, West Bountiful, and the Salt Lake City International Airport. Major highways affected are Interstate 84 between mile markers 104 and 113, Interstate 80 in Utah between mile markers 114 and 119, and 123 and 126, and Interstate 15 between mile markers 303 and 319.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm; lightning can strike up to 10 miles away. Seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. Torrential rainfall is also expected, which may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Monitor weather conditions closely and be alert for threatening weather.
