CVB Accepting Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund Applications by July 6

The City of Brownsville’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB) and Office of Space Commerce is now accepting applications for Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) funding for the 2027 Fiscal Year. Local organizations seeking financial support to promote tourism in Brownsville are encouraged to apply before the application period closes on July 6.This annual funding opportunity supports the CVB’s ongoing collaboration with local organizations to market and promote Brownsville as a visitor destination.In accordance with Texas State Hotel Occupancy Tax requirements, every dollar awarded through this program must directly enhance and promote tourism, as well as the convention and hotel industry within the City of Brownsville. Recipients must have a project that falls under one of the nine statutorily provided categories for expenditures.These categories include:1. Funding the establishment, improvement, or maintenance of a convention center or visitor information center.2. Paying the administrative costs for facilitating convention registration.3. Paying for advertising, solicitations, and promotions that attract tourists and convention delegates to the City or its vicinity.4. Expenditures that promote the arts.5. Funding historical restoration or preservation programs.6. Funding certain expenses, including promotional expenses, directly related to a sporting event within counties with a population of under 1 million.7. Funding the enhancement or upgrading of existing sports facilities or sports fields for certain municipalities.8. Funding transportation systems for tourists.9. Funding signage directing tourists to sights and attractions that are visited frequently by hotel guests in the municipality.To assist interested applicants, the CVB will host a series of Hotel Occupancy Tax Workshops designed to guide participants through the application process. These workshops will cover policies, eligibility criteria, program guidelines, and best practices for submitting a successful application. The workshops will take place on May 20 and June 10 at the CMD/CVB Complex, located at 1312 E. Adams St in downtown Brownsville. Each workshop day will offer two sessions, one at 9:00 AM and another at 3:00 PM, providing flexibility for attendees to participate. One City Fair Highlights Emergency Preparedness, City Resources

For Brownsville resident Ralia Karavasilis, one of the biggest takeaways from the City of Brownsville’s One City Information and All-Hazards Preparedness Fair was learning about the City’s 546-HELP hotline.“I didn’t know about the 546-HELP hotline that the city has,” Karavasilis said while attending the event for the first time at the Brownsville Event Center.The non-emergency hotline connects residents directly with city departments to help answer questions, address concerns, and provide access to city services — one of many resources highlighted during the community event focused on safety, preparedness, and public awareness.The City of Brownsville brought together multiple city departments, first responders, and community organizations in one location to provide residents with information about local services and emergency preparedness resources available throughout the community.Families explored interactive booths, observed live safety demonstrations, and viewed emergency response vehicles used by police, fire, and other public safety teams. Organizers said the fair was designed to create an educational and welcoming atmosphere where residents could learn practical ways to prepare for emergencies while enjoying family-friendly activities.For Brownsville resident Liliana Chavez, the event provided valuable information about services and programs available in the community.“This is great. It creates awareness of many things, for example, recycling. And information about the parks and information safety awareness. There’s so much great information to get,” Chavez said.City officials encouraged attendees to ask questions, connect with local service teams, and learn more about the resources available to support the community before, during, and after emergencies.For Marisela Almeida, who has attended the event three times, the fair continues to showcase the importance of community outreach and public awareness.“This is such an important event because we, the community, sometimes take the city for granted. We don’t know what goes out there, or what the community does for us. This gives us a more in-depth description of how they work, how they help us individuals, and how we can make progress and better ourselves in our lives,” Almeida said.The event highlighted the City of Brownsville’s continued commitment to public safety, community awareness, and strengthening partnerships between residents and the agencies that serve them every day.

Brownsville-Orlando Nonstop Flights Now Available on Breeze Airways

 For Priscilla Perales and her daughter, a mother-daughter trip to Disney World just became much easier.The two were among the passengers flying out of the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport on the inaugural Breeze Airways nonstop flight to Orlando International Airport.“We are going on our mother and daughter trip,” Perales said. “My daughter loves Mickey and Minnie, so she’s super excited to go to Disney World.”The new nonstop route gives families in Brownsville and across the Rio Grande Valley a direct connection to one of the country’s most popular travel destinations, making trips to Central Florida more convenient without having to drive to another airport.For local travelers like Perales, the new service means saving time, staying local and having more options when planning family vacations.“That makes our trips a lot easier,” Perales said. “We will probably be going a lot more often now that Brownsville offers nonstop flights.”City and airport leaders say the new route is about more than convenience. BARCC Urgently Seeks Community Donations for Puppies and Kittens

The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center (BARCC) is asking for the community’s help after recently receiving multiple batches of puppies and kittens in urgent need of care.With an increase in vulnerable newborn animals arriving at the shelter, BARCC is currently running low on critical supplies needed to keep these tiny babies healthy, warm, and nourished. The shelter is urgently requesting donations of the following items:Puppy milk replacerKitten milk replacerPuppy bottles and nursing suppliesHeating discs for foster homesHeating pads for shelter babiesCommunity members interested in donating can drop off supplies directly at the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center during regular business hours.
