Risk Management

Risk Management See Alerts County Closure County Closure Dane County offices will be closed on 10/12/2026 Search Department of Administration Dane County Risk Management The Dane County Risk Management’s mission is to protect Dane County employees, the general public, and the County’s assets from a variety of losses. We do this by working with staff, supervisors, and department heads to identify potential risks. We also ensure that identified risks are eliminated, accepted (and possible damage reduced as much as possible), and/or transferred to another party. Workers’ Compensation If you are injured on the job, first report the accident to your supervisor, then call the Workers’ Comp Care Line at: 888-515-1563. If it’s an emergency, call 911. The nurses who answer this number are available 24/7, and they will: Provide general guidance after an injury Help you find the appropriate level of medical care Help you find a medical facility near the jobsite or your home Start all Workers' Compensation claim paperwork. This is a paperless intake system. After the nurse ends your call, the nurse will forward information to Risk Management & WMMIC, and we will be available for regular, on-going communication with injured employees. WMMIC can be contacted at (608) 268-3002. How to File a Claim Against Dane County To bring an action against Dane County, section 893.80 of the Wisconsin Statutes requires notice be sent to the Dane County Clerk at 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Madison, WI 53703. The notice should contain the claimant's name and address, it should give the County enough information to allow us to investigate and evaluate the claim. It should also contain an itemized statement of the relief sought. No special forms are required to file a claim. In general, state law protects municipalities from having to pay for damages caused after hitting a pothole or running through debris in the road. In these situations, it may be best to contact your auto insurance company instead of filing a claim with Dane County. Social Media Please note that Dane County social media pages are produced and maintained by Dane County. We expect participants will respect each other and we reserve the right to remove any inappropriate content and/or content we deem in violation of applicable law. Our social media pages are not open to the promotion or advertisement of a business or commercial transaction. Dane County does not endorse or support opinions or views expressed by users of our social media and links to other Internet sites should not be construed as an endorsement of the views contained therein. Dane County does not guarantee that external websites comply with the ADA. Please contact [email protected] to request removal of infringing materials. How to Request Records from Dane County Each individual Dane County Department is the Custodian of its own records. A request for a record from the Department of Administration may be made orally or in writing during regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 7:45 am - 4:30 pm). There is no special form to request records. If you have questions regarding your request, please call the Records Control Officer at (608) 445-3056 or fax your request to (608) 283-2973 or email it to [email protected]. Requests for records must contain a reasonable description of the requested records and should, for example, include a date range. A request may be denied if, for example, the records are not indexed, arranged, or automated in a way that the requested records can be retrieved, or if the record is exempted by law from being released in response to a records request, or if the public’s interest in non-disclosure of the record outweighs the public’s interest in disclosure of the record. A request may also be denied if the record does not exist; Dane County is not required to create a new record or compile data from existing records into a new format. Emergency Procedures Emergencies are unpredictable and can strike without warning. The general rule is to remain calm and call 911. An effective response to an emergency requires planning ahead and testing your emergency plans. Plus, the response to an emergency depends upon the type of crisis. Sheriff Foreclosure Sales

Sheriff Foreclosure Sales View Current Sales View All Posting Locations View the Sheriff Sales FAQ Request A Sheriff Sales Date View Third Party Bidder Information **IMPORTANT NOTICE** Sheriff Sales will be conducted every Tuesday at 10:00 AM in Room 354 of the City-County Building 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Madison, WI. Foreclosure sales are for real property only. The Sheriff's Office does not know whether or not persons occupy the property. Further, we cannot give permission for any prospective bidders to enter and inspect any structure that may be located on the property to be sold. Properties sold at auction by the Sheriff's Office are generally advertised in The Wisconsin State Journal and Capital Times online newspaper. Notices appear for at least three weeks prior to the date of the sale. This is different from posting because the publication just has to appear for 3 weeks before the sale date but can start a maximum of 6 weeks before the date and run for 3 straight weeks, then the publication (even though it may stop 2 weeks before the sale date, as long as it runs for 3 weeks straight). In addition to newspaper advertising, a written notice describing the real estate to be sold is posted, at least three weeks prior to the date of the sale, in the town or municipality where the real estate is to be sold and also in public places of the town or municipality where the real estate is situated if it is not in the City of Madison. A copy of the notice may also be found on this website. All properties are sold "as is". The Dane County Sheriff's Office does not have any specific information regarding the condition of the property being sold. Persons interested in obtaining information about a property are encouraged to contact the plaintiff or their attorney of record. Sales of property are “open-type” auction sales with the plaintiff normally submitting an opening bid. Anyone else can bid on the property. The property goes to the highest bidder. If you have a serious interest in a property, you may desire to contact a title company or an attorney to perform a title search. Questions regarding the legalities of purchasing a foreclosed home should be directed to an attorney that specializes in foreclosures. Further, it is the buyer’s responsibility to have the occupants legally removed if the property is occupied. Requirements An original notice and one copy of the notice is needed for property located in the City of Madison and an additional copy is needed for property located within Dane County (original plus 2). If you would like a copy signed and returned, please include an extra copy along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. A posting fee of $75 should be included with your notices made payable to Dane County Sheriff. The additional $75 sale fee can be billed to you after the sale or sent in prior to the sale. If you send the sale fee along with the posting fee and the sale is canceled you will receive a refund, generally within 90 days of the sale. The successful bidder is responsible for any and all legal encumbrances on the property, including any unpaid real estate taxes and the real estate transfer fee. The successful third party bidder is required to have 10% of their bid in cash or in bank-certified funds made payable to the Dane County Clerk of Courts at the time of sale. The balance is due following the confirmation of the sale hearing. There are times a sale does not take place as advertised due to adjournment, settlement, or cancellations. All sales are subject to cancellation or adjournment at any time without notice.

Domestic Abuse

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is committed to the safety and security of our community. Everyone has a right to feel safe in their homes and relationships. In an effort to assist victims experiencing domestic violence, the Sheriff's Office has put together a Safety Suggestions and Community Resources List. The suggestions may not suit everyone's personal situation but may be helpful to someone managing their safety within their home, planning to leave an abusive relationship, or someone that has already fled from violence. The suggestions are printable and can be shared with family, friends, or co-workers that may benefit from the ideas. Notice to Victims of Domestic Abuse When a person has been arrested for a crime involving domestic abuse, we have an obligation to notify you about the procedure for releasing the arrested person as well as the likelihood and probable time of the arrested person's release. The timeline for predicting when an arrested person will be released is influenced by a number of factors. While each domestic abuse arrest is unique, certain conditions must be met prior to release from jail: Formal booking into the Dane County Jail is necessary. Processing time may vary depending on how busy the jail is or on the unique considerations of the individual who has been arrested. (i.e. Does the arrested person require medical attention prior to processing?) Bail must be met before an arrested person can be released. In cases of battery and other misdemeanor charges, cash, VISA, and AMERICAN EXPRESS can be posted. MasterCard, DISCOVER, and checks are not accepted. In such cases, an arraignment will be set for a date as soon as possible (with a court time determined later). When a person bails out, the release could occur as soon as within an hour of arrest! For those individuals who cannot post bail or have been arrested for a felony, an arraignment will be held as soon as possible. However, in these situations, arraignment times can vary. Please call Central Booking or Court Services for specific times. Usually, the arrested person is released from jail after the arraignment. Prior to the arrested person being released on bail, they must sign an acknowledgment at the jail that they received notice of the "No Contact" requirements, and the increased penalties for additional acts of domestic abuse. Refusal to sign this acknowledgment will result in a release from jail being denied. It should be noted that the information provided here is advisory only. Individual facts and circumstances, coupled with the varying demands placed on the jail, make it extremely difficult to predict the exact time that an arrested person will be released. If you want to know whether an arrested person is still in jail, contact the Dane County Jail Central Booking at (608) 284-6100. An alternative way to find out an arrested person's custody status is to register and use the VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) system. Click here to access VINE. How to Obtain a Restraining Order The following information is provided by the Sheriff's Office and Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. A Domestic Abuse Temporary Restraining Order / Injunction is designed for the protection of domestic abuse victims. You can apply for an order by going to the Records Center, which is located in Room 1002 of the Dane County Courthouse, 215 S. Hamilton St., Madison during regular business hours. There is no fee for the petitioner. In most cases, a Restraining Order can be served by a Dane County Sheriff's Deputy on the same day that it is applied for. If the arrested person is still in jail, it can be served on them immediately. At the time the temporary order is issued, a hearing date is usually set within 7 days to make the order permanent. Any violation of either a Temporary Restraining Order or an Injunction is a criminal violation which will result in the defendant being immediately arrested. Domestic Abuse Intervention Services provides a free legal advocacy program to assist you in obtaining a Restraining Order/Injunction. For support, information, legal assistance, or shelter, call their Help and Crisis Line at (608) 251-4445 or 1 (800) 747-4045 (24 hours, Language Line and TDD). Weapons Surrender Upon issuance of an injunction or a conviction for domestic abuse, all firearms in possession of the respondent must be turned over to the Sheriff's Office. How to Surrender Firearms to the Sheriff's Office Call the non-emergency Dispatch Center number (608) 255-2345 Tell the Dispatcher you have been ordered by the Court to surrender your firearms to the Sheriff, and you would like to have a deputy pick them up Make sure your firearms are unloaded and uncased (you will keep any cases in your possession so you can bring them with you to pick up your firearms after the Injunction expires) Take your copy of the Property Receipt, given to you by the deputy collecting your firearms, to the Clerk of Courts for placement in the Court file DO NOT take your firearms to the Public Safety Building, the Courthouse, or any of the Sheriff's Office Precincts - You MUST have the firearms picked up by a deputy
