Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, 41, informed his teammates Monday that the current NHL season will be his last. The announcement signals the conclusion of a 22-season career exclusively with the Capitals.
Ovechkin, who broke Wayne Gretzky's career goal-scoring record in April 2025, shared his decision directly with the team. "It's sad, but it is what it is," he said, encouraging his teammates to "enjoy it and let's do some special things this year."
Drafted first overall in 2004, Ovechkin debuted Oct. 5, 2005, scoring two goals against the Columbus Blue Jackets. His numerous accolades include the Calder Trophy, Richard Trophy, Hart Trophy, Pearson Award, and eight First-Team NHL All-Star selections. He is also recognized among the 100 Greatest NHL Players.
As of Monday, Ovechkin had recorded 929 goals, 1,688 points and 857 penalty minutes in 1,575 games. He captained the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in 2018, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy with 15 postseason goals.
Ovechkin signed a one-year contract for $4.25 million, according to the team, for his final season.
The Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, Oct. 7, for their first home game. Their last regular-season home game is April 4 against the Penguins, with the season finale on April 10 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Ovechkin urged his team to make the playoffs. "We have an unbelievable team this year. Let's make the playoffs, let's have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly," he said.
