HBO has greenlit a one-hour drama series based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling “Crazy Rich Asians” books. The announcement came Thursday, Oct. 9, 2026.
The new series will reunite original cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng. Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh also will recur.
Showrunner and executive producer Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, called the project a “CRAZY RICH family reunion!” The series will act as a sequel to the film, with eight episodes planned to explore characters and worlds from Kwan’s novels.
The original film grossed $239 million worldwide. It followed Chinese-American professor Rachel Chu as she discovered her boyfriend Nick Young’s family's immense wealth and status in Singapore. Rachel navigated scrutiny from socialites, including Nick’s mother, Eleanor.
Director Jon M. Chu, who helmed the 2018 film, will co-executive produce the series with Lim, Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Chu said he is eager to answer the question he has heard for eight years: “When are we getting the sequel?”
Production for the new series is slated to begin in 2027.
