Actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, 58, recently shared details of a life-threatening health crisis from 2023 that he described as a near-death experience. The incident, which resulted in a brain bleed and stroke, has significantly impacted his perspective and fueled a renewed creative drive, leading to a new standup special.
In an interview aired Monday on Good Morning America, Foxx recounted the gravity of his condition. He recalled a nurse telling him, "You're a miracle. You're a three-percenter," indicating that fewer than 3% of individuals with his condition survive.
Foxx credited his recovery to his close circle of friends and family, stating, "I had to depend on people." He described a moment of stark realization upon waking, seeing himself in a wheelchair and questioning his health.
The experience has reshaped his outlook on how he will be remembered. "When we all go, it's how they speak your name. It's how they feel about you. So, I kind of keep that in the back of my head when I'm telling jokes," Foxx said.
Following medical treatment and recovery, which included playing pickleball, Foxx has returned to comedy feeling more creative than ever. His new Hulu standup special, titled “Take Care of Yourself,” was filmed in Oakland, California, the city where he launched his career by winning the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition & Festival in 1991.
The special features a performance by his daughter, Anelise, who joined him on stage to showcase her musical talents. “Take Care of Yourself” premieres Wednesday on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
