NEWTON – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Newton, effective immediately until 12:15 PM UTC today, October 9th.

Residents should prepare for the potential of moderate flooding rain. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. If you are in an area vulnerable to flooding, consider protective actions. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph), conditions may still be gusty. The NWS indicates little to no additional wind impacts are expected, and community officials are assessing actual wind impacts.

Around 1 inch of rainfall is forecast. Potential significant impacts from flooding include swollen rivers and tributaries, overflow of small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches, and water entering some structures. Hazardous driving conditions, road closures, and bridge closures are possible due to rapid inundation in low-lying areas. Tornadoes are not expected at this time, but remain informed of any forecast changes.

Listen for any instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change.
