NEWTON – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Newton by the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson MS, effective immediately as of October 9 at 10:02 AM CDT. The watch is set to expire on October 9 at 6:15 PM CDT. Residents should prepare for potential moderate flooding from heavy rain.

The NWS forecasts peak rainfall amounts around 1 inch. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches could overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures and impact foundations. Hazardous driving conditions are expected in low-lying areas due to rapid inundation, with possible road and bridge closures. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions.

Wind speeds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with peak winds of 10-20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. While direct wind impacts are currently being assessed as little to none, conditions may be gusty. No tornadoes are expected, though gusty winds may accompany showers and thunderstorms. Listen for any instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change.
