Dangerous Rip Currents Threaten Local Beaches Today
Dangerous rip currents are expected at beaches in West Carteret, East Carteret, and Coastal Onslow counties until 8 PM EDT today, October 11, 2026, according to the National Weather Service.
Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution at area beaches today, October 11, 2026, due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC. Dangerous rip currents are expected from now until 8:00 PM EDT this evening.
The affected areas include West Carteret, East Carteret, and Coastal Onslow counties, specifically the beaches stretching from Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City.
The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The most probable time for strong rip currents is a couple of hours around low tide, which is expected around 3:00 PM today.
If you get caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shoreline. If you become tired, float or tread water until you can escape the current. If you are unable to get out, face the shore and call or wave for help.
