Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Today on Crystal Coast Beaches
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Crystal Coast beaches today, October 10, from 8 AM to 8 PM EDT, warning of dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents.
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for West Carteret and Coastal Onslow counties, including all Crystal Coast beaches, due to dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents. The statement is effective from 8 AM EDT this morning, October 10, until 8 PM EDT this evening.
The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City NC warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore. Strong longshore currents will also create hazardous swimming conditions, potentially sweeping individuals into piers, jetties, or other dangerous areas.
Swimmers should exercise extreme caution. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If you become tired, float or tread water until you can escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
The period around low tide, expected around 2:00 PM today, is when strong rip currents are most likely to occur.
