Dangerous Rip Current Warning for Coastal Carteret & Onslow Counties
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for coastal Carteret and Onslow counties due to dangerous rip currents expected from 8 AM Sunday through Sunday evening.
Beachgoers in West Carteret, East Carteret, and Coastal Onslow counties are advised of a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC. Dangerous rip currents are expected from 8 AM EDT Sunday, October 11, through Sunday evening.
The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple of hours on either side of low tide, which is expected around 3:00 PM EDT on Sunday.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swimmers should swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you become tired, float or tread water until you are out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. This Beach Hazards Statement is effective until 8:00 PM EDT on Sunday, October 11.
