Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Coastal Onslow, West Carteret
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Coastal Onslow and West Carteret from Saturday morning through Saturday evening, warning of dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents at Crystal Coast beaches.
Coastal Onslow and West Carteret residents and visitors should be aware of a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City NC. This statement is effective from 8:00 AM EDT Saturday, October 10th, and will remain in effect through Saturday evening.
Dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents are expected in the surf zone, specifically affecting Crystal Coast beaches. Rip currents are capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Strong longshore currents will create hazardous swimming conditions.
The NWS advises that the most likely time for strong rip currents to occur will be a couple of hours either side of low tide, which is anticipated around 2:00 PM EDT on Saturday.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shoreline. If you become tired, float or tread water until you are out of the current. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Strong longshore currents can pull swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other dangerous areas, making it difficult to return to shore.
