Obituary: Jaxyn Van Thomas, 11

Jaxyn Van Thomas, 11 years old, of Granbury, Texas, departed this life on June 3rd, 2026. Affectionately known as “J.T.” to his classmates, Jaxyn was truly one of a kind. With a stature that could rival any high school football player, he was well on his way to an invitation to join his beloved Dallas Cowboys one day. Dubbed by neighbors and best friends as the “Gentle Giant” with an old soul, he truly had the kindest, sweetest, most gentle spirit. As evidenced by his love for animals, especially his cats, his soul was magnetic to those around him.Jaxyn was born to John and Crystal Thomas on July 4th, 2014 in Childress, Texas, where he made his entrance with the first eruption of fireworks during the midnight hour. The 4th of July was a special event every year since it was also J.T.’s birthday. Independence Day of 2025 left a lasting impression for his family and his neighbors, as that was the day J.T. donned his denim overall shorts and boots. Combined with his impressive mullet, which his mom aptly named “‘merica!!” he was quite a sight for all to see. This outfit combination became his daily choice for most of that summer, much to the delight of all the neighbors. He certainly made everyone look twice and smile.Jaxyn attended Oak Woods School in Granbury, Texas, where he was well-known for his white glasses and his epic mullet haircut. J.T. was looking forward to his 12th birthday on July 4th, a summer full of backyard pool time, playing in the sprinkler on the trampoline and Nerf Gun Wars with his neighborhood best friends, fishing Lake Granbury from his neighbor’s dock, lazy days on the couch with his beloved cat Prissy Boy, cooking and gardening with Mom, and online video gaming with his dad and bubba.Amongst some of Jaxyn’s favorite memories was a family trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he learned that he loved the ocean and the beach sand. Thus began his love for being a human excavator. He put his digging skills to work at home in the backyard, where he would dig holes all over while hunting for rocks. It is known at J.T.’s home that you better watch where you’re walking so that you don’t twist an ankle! J.T. was also quite proud of his knife collection. He once even set up a table to display his knives in his neighbor’s front yard, then waved cars down to stop and pay him money to see the collection. During 5th grade school Field Day, J.T. very proudly devoured EIGHTEEN pickle pops. School staff grabbed photos for proof, and he loved to brag about this particular moment of fame. J.T. enjoyed accompanying his dad on long road trips in the work semi-truck, where they would swap stories and just enjoy being together.Jaxyn was preceded in death by his paternal Great Grandma Rose Thomas, Grandpa Van Thomas, Grandpa Simon, Uncle Skip Thomas, and Linda “Mimi”Trosper; maternal Great Grandfather Bill Bailey, Great-Grands Noel “Papa Jack” Burrows and wife-beloved Mary Ann Burrows, Papa Larry “Cotton” Bailey, Roni “NeNe” Bailey and uncle Christopher Prather. Jaxyn was also preceded by two of his beloved pets who were with him since the day he was born; his dog, Lady, and his cat, Lil Girl.Left to cherish memories of Jaxyn are his parents, John and Crystal Thomas and brother Sheltyn Blu Woodford of Granbury, TX. Also Grandpa John Edward Thomas, Grandma Sue Simon, Grandma Shirley Pollard, Uncle Daniel Thomas and family, Aunt Amanda McClure and family, Aunt Ashley Silvers, Grannie Naomi Bailey, Nana Belinda Bailey, Uncle Royce and Michie Burrows, Uncle Dane Burrows, Aunt Connie “Nodi” Ferrell and husband Mickey, cousins Melissa Harper and boys and Cortney Brown and children, and so many more beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.Special thanks to Ronnie Shoffner, Chaplain John Hosea, Stonewater Church, Many Mansions, Shane Brooks, and Wiley Funeral Home. Harvey Spurgin, Arlington Fire Department Lieutenant, Passes After Extended Illness

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a great man. Harvey Edward Spurgin has departed this earthly world after a heroic 6-month battle brought on by a sudden aortic dissection; ambushed and betrayed by one his very own heart. After the initial blow, he bravely rose up and waged war (5 heart surgeries and two strokes in six months) - allied only by the many surgeons, doctors, and nurses as well as his loyal and loving family and friends.Never showing fear or weakness, he faced this adversity with an iron will and a courage not seen by many.Despite his bravery and heroic efforts, he was felled and took his final breaths with his devastated family by his side on May 29, 2026.In life, Eddy was lucky and blessed enough to know True Love. This force was powerful enough to manifest the foundation for a life so sweet and beautiful, and a family whose love for each other could never be broken, even by Death.Along with his family, his friends also grieve for him now, many from his high school years. Some are comrades that battled alongside him during his storied 30-year career as a Lieutenant at the Arlington Fire Department, spent aiding and serving his fellow man in their darkest moments and saving many lives.Eddy lived his life guided by his values: Family, Hard work, and treating people with kindness and respect. He always said that “people don’t remember so much as what you’ve said to them, but rather how you made them feel.”Eddy seized the day and lived with no regrets. He jumped out of an airplane, hiked Big Bend, Rocky Mountain National Park, and every national park in Utah. He danced and rode motorcycles. Eddy drank beer on the porch and listened to John Prine. He raised goats, pigs, sheep, donkeys, horses, and a multitude of other animals. He drove fence posts into the rocky Hill country ground. He painted “King of the Hill” on a riding lawnmower and learned how to weld. He built cabins and helped you move. He killed snakes and always went off the rope swing. Eddy and Lynn rode camels in Egypt and explored the streets of Greece. They listened to the calls of howler monkeys in the jungles of Costa Rica and drank margaritas in Mexico. They stayed up all night at Winstar and when they hit Vegas. They spent weeks in the summers on the Texas coast, eating seafood and catching crabs with their children and grandbabies. He went by many names:Busby. Dad. Lieutenant. Buzz. Biscuit. Ed-Ro. Catfish. It wasn’t until his later years, that he received the highest of titles:PawPaw.PawPaw drove the school bus for Glen Rose ISD alongside his wife, now known as Nana, in a dastardly and clever scheme to spend even more time with their grandchildren. He built his own house on a plot of land that Lynn and he had scrimped and saved their entire lives to pay for. This was another dastardly plot to encourage their adult children to live on the land as well, which would in turn grant unlimited access to the grandbabies.Though Eddy is gone, his legacy lives on as he is survived by his One True love, wife, and best friend Lynn Elaine Spurgin as well as their three beloved children Brandon David Spurgin, Jae Lauren Blanton, and Caitlyn Cheyenne Greene, and their husbands, Denver Bryan Greene and Arthur Wesley Blanton. He’s also survived by his beloved sisters Janice Awtry and Kathy Stern, and his brother in laws Donald Awtry and Jerry Stern. He’s survived by his cherished brothers Carl Allan Spurgin and Ernie Busby, along with his sister in law Deborah Busby. His many nieces and nephews also grieve for this loss. Perhaps the most devastated though are his beloved grandbabies, whom brought him great joy and purpose:Rowan Jae Greene, Steely Kay Greene, Tanner Lynn Greene, Asher Andres Luzunaris, Adalynn Mae Luzunaris, Everly Rae Blanton, and Madeline Blanton. He goes now to join his mother Minta Delynn Alexander, and his fathers Ralph Earl Busby and Felix Carl Spurgin, who preceded him in death. But only his first death. As Ernest Hemingway said, “Every man has two deaths. When he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name.”Funeral services will be held at The Wiley Center in Granbury at 11AM on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
