Rip Current Statement Issued: Dangerous Conditions on Coastal Pender & New Hanover

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties until 8 PM tonight, with dangerous rip currents and high surf expected, according to the NWS.

Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties are under a Rip Current Statement, effective immediately until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, October 10th. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC, has issued this alert due to dangerous rip currents and high surf.

Large breaking waves of 3 to 7 feet are expected in the surf zone, creating hazardous swimming and surfing conditions. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM EDT this evening, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shoreline if possible, or face the shore and call or wave for help.

For the Coastal Flood Advisory, low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may experience minor coastal flooding. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Check with local officials for any road closures or impacts.
