Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf, and Coastal Flooding Expected Today

Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties face dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding today; follow safety instructions for swimming and travel.

Staff Writer
10/10/2026 · New Hanover County edition

Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties are currently under a Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.

A High Rip Current Risk is in effect from 6 AM EDT this morning through this evening, October 10th. Dangerous rip currents are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, then swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is active from 6 AM to 10 AM EDT this morning, October 10th. Up to half a foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Minor coastal flooding may impact low-lying roads and areas along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks. If travel is required, allow extra time for potential road closures. Do not drive through water of unknown depth. Protect flood-prone property.

Additionally, a High Surf Advisory will be in effect from 2 PM this afternoon, October 10th, until 8 AM EDT Sunday, October 12th. Large breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet are expected, leading to dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

Stay informed and check with local officials for any road closures or additional impacts.
