Slow the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer

Slow the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer Help keep the invasive insect out of state parks for as long as possible with these tips It's hard to imagine that tiny insects hiding in your firewood could significantly harm a healthy forest, but emerald ash borer threatens to wipe out Oregon's ash trees and change the landscape for generations. This invasive species has been sighted in five Oregon counties: Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Yamhill and Marion counties. It is considered the most destructive forest pest in North America, killing hundreds of millions of ash trees across the country. There is a permanent tree material quarantine for all five counties to slow the spread. The quarantine means that tree materials of ash, olive and white fringe tree, including firewood, must remain within the county. Wood waste from these species must be processed accordingly and disposed of to slow the spread of emerald ash borer in Oregon. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the state's ash trees. On their own, the emerald ash borers can only travel in a 10-mile radius. With your help, we can slow the spread of these deadly pests to protect Oregon ash trees. Learn how to identify this beetle and ash trees and follow the safe firewood guidelines below. Firewood guidelines: Buy locally harvested firewood at or near your destination (within 10 miles). Buy certified heat-treated firewood ahead of time, if available. Do not move ash, olive or white fringe tree firewood from Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas and Marion to anywhere else. When in doubt about the tree species, leave it out. Thank you for your support in protecting our state’s ash trees. This signature tree grows in riparian areas along rivers, streams and other low-elevation bodies of water in Western Oregon. The loss of ash trees could have a significant impact on riparian ecology including loss of shade, increased water temperatures and decline in fish health. For more information go to Oregoneab.com. Map of impacted areas around the state Explore our emerald ash borer activity pages to find engaging resources for all ages on how to recognize and prevent the spread of this invasive species.

Clackamas County announces plan to become the national model in aiding domestic and sexual violence victims

Clackamas County announces plan to become the national model in aiding domestic and sexual violence victims | Clackamas County Skip to main content News Clackamas County announces plan to become the national model in aiding domestic and sexual violence victims Clackamas County announces plan to become the national model in aiding domestic and sexual violence victims Date 9/30/2026 OREGON CITY, Or. -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, traditionally a time when advocates for victims of abuse focus on the prevalence and impact of the problem. Clackamas County District Attorney John Wentworth is a career prosecutor who has seen the devastation caused by domestic and sexual abuse. Clackamas County files roughly twice the national average of domestic violence and sexual assault cases. Wentworth took office with one overarching goal: To make Clackamas County the national leader in providing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Work on what Wentworth dubbed the Gold Standard began last year. The effort brings together the best practices of programs throughout the nation. “Why is this the Gold Standard? Because there are place places around the country doing these things individually, but no one is doing them altogether,” Wentworth said. On Thursday, Oct. 1, Wentworth will provide a progress report on this initiative. When: 11:15 a.m. Where: Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Brooks Building Auditorium, 9101 SE Sunnybrook Road Wentworth will be joined by Clackamas County Sheriff James Rhodes and Melissa Erlbaum, Clackamas Women's Services Executive Director who will discuss their efforts to hold offenders accountable and to connect domestic violence victims to needed services. Clackamas County files roughly twice the national average of domestic violence and sexual assault cases. Wentworth is standardizing training countywide for detectives, patrol officers, paramedics and prosecutors so victims all receive the best service regardless of where they live in the county. “We are establishing a certification program for law enforcement officers and prosecutors who regularly handle sexual assault and domestic violence cases. Professionals will now receive special training that will enable them to handle these difficult cases in the most trauma-informed, victim-centered, and offender-focused manner possible,” Wentworth said. “This month, we will offer access to crime victims on our website so they can see up-to-the-minute information about what’s happening with their cases,” Wentworth said. “Finally, we will replace and expand our Family Justice Center, which provides a wide range of services to anyone experiencing domestic or sexual violence,” Wentworth said. The new Family Justice Center is expected to open in 2029. The Center needs to expand to serve the growing needs of our county,” Wentworth said. “If someone reaches out for help, we need to be there for them.” Wentworth, Rhodes and Erlbaum will be available for interviews after the news conference.
