Murphysboro residents planning to demolish a structure must now navigate a detailed application process through the Building and Neighborhood Services Division. The city requires applicants to verify all utility disconnects, including gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, and cable, before a demolition permit can be issued. This verification must be provided to the division prior to permit approval.

Submission requirements for a demolition permit include a completed application, a contract with a licensed demolition contractor or a homeowner's affidavit, and the contractor's certificate of insurance. Additionally, applicants need to provide a paid receipt from the City of Carbondale Water Department for water service termination, a paid receipt from Ameren Illinois for electric and gas termination, and potentially a receipt from the Jackson County Health Department for septic tank abandonment. An Asbestos Inspection Report is necessary if the entire structure is being demolished.

Demolition permits are valid for 180 days from their issuance date. For questions or further information, residents can contact the Building and Neighborhood Services Division at 618-457-3262.
