Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Montgomery; Dangerous Winds, Flooding Expected
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Montgomery, issued October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT, bringing dangerous winds up to 90 mph until early Saturday afternoon, major flooding from 1-3 inches of rain, and a potential for tornadoes.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Montgomery by the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham AL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT. Residents must now shelter from dangerous winds.
Strong Tropical Storm force winds are anticipated, with peak gusts of 50-65 mph, potentially reaching 90 mph. These dangerous winds are expected to continue until early Saturday afternoon. Last-minute efforts to protect life and property should already be complete. The NWS advises sheltering from these dangerous winds, as significant damage is possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Montgomery can expect an additional 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, posing a major flooding threat. Emergency plans should include the potential for major flooding, and evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life. Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues, with rivers and small streams potentially overflowing their banks.
There is also a potential for a few tornadoes. The NWS indicates that the situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes. Stay within your shelter and remain informed of the latest tornado situation. If a tornado warning is issued, move quickly to the safest place within your shelter. Limited impacts from tornadoes could include localized damage, power outages, and communications disruptions.
