Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Surf and Rip Currents Expected

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas due to dangerous surf, rip currents, and sneaker waves, with coastal flooding also expected.

Residents in San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast are advised to exercise extreme caution near the shoreline. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, effective from 3:51 AM PDT on October 12 until 10:00 PM PDT on October 12, due to an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves.

Breaking waves up to 16 feet are expected. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 3:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, October 13, with up to 1.5 feet of inundation above ground level possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures anticipated.

The NWS warns that high tides will result in flooding along coastal trails, cut off access to some low-lying beaches and coastal areas, and bring water and waves farther up the beach than typical. Dangerous conditions are forecast along the shoreline. Hazards include sneaker waves, strong rip currents, and large breaking waves.

To ensure safety, residents should stay off jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous surf and NEVER turn your back on the ocean. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
