Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Surf, Rip Currents Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast until October 12, with dangerous surf, rip currents, and sneaker waves expected. Stay off jetties and out of the water.
Residents and visitors in San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast counties are advised to exercise extreme caution near coastal areas due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco. The statement is effective immediately, October 11 at 7:19 AM PDT, and remains in effect until October 12 at 10:00 PM PDT.
Dangerous conditions are forecast along the shoreline, including an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. Breaking waves up to 16 feet are expected. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 3 PM PDT on Tuesday, October 13, with up to 1.5 feet of inundation possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
High tides will result in flooding along coastal trails, cut off access to some low-lying beaches, and bring water and waves farther up the beach than typical. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads is possible, with only isolated road closures expected.
The NWS advises the public to stay off jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous surf, and NEVER turn your back on the ocean. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
