Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Surf, Rip Currents Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay/Big Sur Coast until Monday evening due to dangerous surf, rip currents, and sneaker waves up to 16 feet, with coastal flooding also expected.
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for coastal areas of San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and the Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco has issued this statement, effective immediately, until Monday evening, October 12th.
Residents and visitors should remain out of the water due to an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. Breaking waves up to 16 feet are expected. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 3 PM PDT Tuesday, October 13th. Up to 1.4 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Impacts include potential flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures possible. High tides will result in flooding along coastal trails and may cut off access to some low-lying beaches. Dangerous conditions are forecast along the shoreline.
The NWS advises staying off jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. Never turn your back on the ocean. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed, and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
