A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Monroe County, including Homewood and Monroeville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Mobile, AL, issued the warning today, October 9, at 3:55 PM CDT. This warning is set to expire at 12:00 AM CDT on October 10. Residents in affected areas should shelter now as dangerous wind conditions are unfolding.

Peak wind forecasts are between 20-30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, but there is potential for winds between 58 to 73 mph. Last-minute preparations should be complete. Significant wind damage is possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. There is a potential for major flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of major flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.

The situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes. Continue to monitor the latest tornado situation. If a tornado warning is issued, move quickly to the safest place within your shelter. Isolated tornadoes can cause damage and disrupt power and communications.
