MOBILE CENTRAL – Residents in Mobile, Prichard, and Theodore are urged to finalize storm preparations as a Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective October 7 at 11:09 AM CDT. Life-threatening inundation from rising water and hurricane-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect, indicating hurricane-force winds (74 to 110 mph) are possible. Peak winds are forecast between 25-35 mph with gusts to 55 mph, but the potential exists for much higher. Extensive damage to roofs, mobile homes, and large trees is anticipated, with widespread power and communications outages possible. Rigorous efforts to protect life and property should be underway now, and preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous.

A life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. This could lead to deep inundation in areas including the Dog River, Mobile River tributaries, and downtown Mobile, with structural damage and roads, such as the US 90 Causeway, becoming impassable. Evacuation preparations should be underway. Assemble disaster supplies and know your evacuation route. Leave immediately if evacuation orders are given for your area.

Additionally, 4-8 inches of rain are forecast, with locally higher amounts, posing a threat of major flooding. Tornadoes are also possible. This alert expires October 7 at 7:15 PM UTC.
