Storm Surge Watch Issued for Mobile Coastal Areas; Evacuations Possible
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Mobile Coastal areas, including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre, with potential for life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, major flooding, and tornadoes.
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective October 7 at 4:03 PM CDT, for Mobile Coastal areas including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre. This watch indicates a potential for life-threatening storm surge and severe wind impacts.
Residents in these areas should prepare for potential life-threatening storm surge flooding greater than 6 feet above ground, with peak inundation possible from 4-7 feet above ground from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Evacuation preparations should be underway. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, leave immediately; failure to do so could result in loss of life.
Equivalent Tropical Storm force winds are expected from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning, with peak gusts up to 75 mph. There is a potential for hurricane-force winds (74-110 mph). Extensive damage to property, widespread power outages, and impassable roads are possible. Act now to complete all preparations before hazardous winds begin.
Additionally, 3-6 inches of rain, with localized higher amounts, could lead to major flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. A few tornadoes are also possible. For evacuation and shelter information, contact Mobile County EMA at 251-460-8000 or visit mobilecountyema.gov. Further storm information is available at www.weather.gov/mob. This watch expires October 8 at 12:15 AM UTC.
