First Steps of Spartanburg: Supporting Families, Childcare Providers, and Children
If you’ve ever wondered what First Steps of Spartanburg actually does—you’re not alone. We often hear that people know we do important work in the community, but aren’t always sure what that looks like day to day. And honestly? That’s on us to explain more clearly. So let’s break it down. At its core, First Steps is about helping children, families, and childcare providers succeed. That may sound simple—but the way we do that reaches into so many parts of our community. We support families. Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, and raising young children can feel overwhelming at times. Through programs like Early Head Start, we provide support, resources, and guidance to help families navigate those early years with confidence. Whether it’s connecting families to childcare, offering developmental support, or simply being a consistent source of encouragement—our goal is to make sure families don’t have to figure it all out alone. We support childcare providers. Childcare providers are the backbone of our community—and they don’t always get the support they deserve. Through programs like Quality Counts and initiatives like Project 100, we work alongside center owners, directors, and teachers to strengthen their programs. This can look like coaching, training, resources, and ongoing support that helps centers improve quality, build stability, and feel more confident in the work they do every day. We prepare children for school success. Everything we do connects back to one goal: making sure children are ready to succeed when they walk into a classroom. That means supporting early learning, building social and emotional skills, and creating environments where children can grow, explore, and thrive. Because those early years? They matter more than most people realize. What does this look like in real life? It looks like: a parent finding childcare they trust a teacher gaining new tools and confidence a center becoming stronger and more stable a child learning, growing, and feeling supported It’s not just one program or one moment—it’s a network of support working together behind the scenes. Why this work matters When families are supported, they’re able to work, grow, and provide stability for their children. When childcare providers are strong, children receive better care and early learning experiences. And when children start school ready to succeed, the impact carries forward—for years. This is about more than early childhood. It’s about building a stronger Spartanburg. So… what does First Steps of Spartanburg actually do? We support families. We strengthen childcare providers. We prepare children for school success. Every single day. And while the work may not always be visible, the impact is—through the children, families, and communities we serve.
