Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Muscogee: Prepare for High Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Muscogee County, including Columbus, with expected tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes; residents should complete preparations and stay informed.
COLUMBUS, GA – October 9, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Muscogee County, including Columbus, effective immediately until 7:30 PM UTC today. Tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. Residents should complete preparations now.
Peak wind forecasts anticipate 15-25 mph winds with gusts up to 45 mph. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, some downed trees, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on bridges and elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain possible, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, requiring potential evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Drivers should be aware of hazardous conditions and possible road closures due to inundation at underpasses and low-lying areas.
The NWS also indicates a potential for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Residents in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures.
