Florida Pharmacists May Soon Administer Chikungunya Vaccine

The Florida Department of Health proposes a rule change allowing pharmacists statewide to administer the chikungunya vaccine. The measure aims to improve access to preventative care for the mosquito-borne illness, which has seen a significant number of cases in Miami-Dade County.

Chikungunya, a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, causes fever and severe joint pain. The World Health Organization notes its symptoms can resemble dengue and Zika, complicating diagnosis.

Florida has reported 189 chikungunya cases this year. Miami-Dade County accounts for 120 of these cases. Ninety-two cases occurred in January.

The proposed rule could streamline vaccination, making the chikungunya vaccine more accessible, particularly in areas like Miami-Dade.

The department has not announced a timeline for the rule's finalization or implementation.
