NW Miami-Dade Residents Question Iron Mountain Data Center Planned Near Homes, Citing Lack of Notification

Northwest Miami-Dade residents are raising concerns about a planned Iron Mountain data center, citing a lack of notification and potential impacts on their community. Amy Dawkins, who lives just 1,500 feet from the proposed site, expressed "utter disbelief" upon learning about the project.

This development impacts residents in an area where many industrial zones sit close to residential neighborhoods. The Miami-Dade Beacon Council oversees the project, which has drawn criticism from locals who feel left out of the planning process.

Dawkins discovered the data center construction only after receiving a phone call from a canvasser. She stated that no prior notification, warning, or information about the potential development came to her attention. In April, other residents in the area gathered to discuss similar concerns about the project.

Commissioner Marleine Bastien, who represents the affected area, has engaged with Iron Mountain to mitigate potential impacts and advocate for community benefits. She noted that Miami-Dade County's zoning regulations classify data centers as telecommunications hubs, which are permitted uses in industrial zones. Iron Mountain made a zoning request in front of the Community Zoning Appeals Board in 2023, a board composed of community residents.

More than 40% of Americans now live within five miles of an operating or planned data center, according to PEW Research. With a groundbreaking ceremony for the Iron Mountain facility having taken place in 2025, residents anticipate further discussions and potential actions regarding the data center's proximity to their homes.
