She also alleged Cardoso inappropriately touched her, including tapping her on the buttocks and picking her up by the waist. On another occasion, in his classroom before school, Cardoso asked her for a kiss, which she declined, prompting him to say he was joking.

Cardoso was initially arrested on September 11 with more than a dozen charges. These included offenses against students by authority figures, lewd and lascivious conduct on a child, and transmitting or showing obscene material to a minor. The initial charges involved five other students who reported similar encounters. Some of these students stated Cardoso removed them from other classes, such as physical education or lunch, to bring them to his classroom for classwork.
