Miami High-Rise Dog Owner Arrested for Animal Cruelty After Neighbor Complaints, Animal Services Intervention

Miami-Dade County Animal Services arrested a dog owner at a local high-rise after neighbors reported neglect. Kevin Benjamin faces charges of animal cruelty with intent to injure or kill, according to Miami-Dade Jail records. This arrest followed a community outcry and intervention from animal services at the Park Line condominium.

Residents became concerned after a video circulated on social media showing a dog on a balcony, appearing thin and neglected. This footage sparked suspicions of abandonment or abuse among neighbors who observed the dog in those conditions for several days. The community's swift action led to the dog's rescue and the owner's subsequent arrest.

Catalina Balzano, a neighbor and the head of Bentley’s Playhouse, mobilized community efforts to rescue the dog. Balzano, who has experience rescuing animals, quickly worked to identify the unit number after seeing the viral video. She then engaged other residents in the building to gather information and assistance, noting the dog looked like it would not survive much longer.

The community's response impressed Balzano, who expressed being at a loss for words over how people came together both online and in person. Hours after residents and community members began piecing together the situation, police pinpointed the apartment. Animal Services then picked up the dog, leading directly to Benjamin's arrest.
