Camillus House Helps Miami Man Build Career & Home

MIAMI – Felix, a local resident, built a stable career and found a lasting home after receiving support from Camillus House. His journey began with a need for basic necessities and evolved into a story of personal growth and professional success.

Felix first sought assistance at Camillus House, utilizing its Day Center for meals and showers. He soon transitioned to the organization’s emergency shelter, a move that provided a safe place to stay and a crucial stepping stone toward a new future.

While residing at Camillus House, Felix enrolled in a construction training program offered through Florida International University. During his time in the program, he earned nationally recognized certifications, including a forklift certification. The Camillus House team also helped him obtain a Florida ID and a Social Security card. After graduating from the FIU courses in spring 2023, Felix acquired two additional certifications.

His engagement with Camillus House extended beyond classroom learning. Through the organization’s Work Therapy program, Felix began working in the Day Center where he had initially sought services. This experience helped him develop workplace skills, build confidence, and cultivate a sense of purpose.

By the end of 2023, Felix moved into permanent supportive housing facilitated by Camillus House. He has also established a career with a local business, where he has been employed for two years. In his current role, he uses his forklift certification daily to process new merchandise. Felix credits the confidence, communication, and work habits he honed through training and work with the Camillus House Workforce Development team for his success in securing and maintaining his job.

Felix proudly refers to Camillus House as his “first house,” expressing gratitude for the learning, work, stability, and future it provided. He now hopes to volunteer at Camillus House to assist others embarking on similar journeys.

Felix’s experience shows how opportunities, support, and a starting point can lead to unimagined futures.
