Family Burial Plots & Companion Graves

"Our families are usually our first strong support systems. Family is with us through thick and thin, lifting us up when we’re low and celebrating our achievements throughout our lives. So it makes sense that many families choose to be laid to rest together. Whether you're choosing a family burial plot for immediate and extended family members or a companion grave for you and your spouse or partner, cemetery property can carry forward a critical bond after death. Family plots also establish a lasting legacy. A permanent memorial gives future generations a place to visit and reflect. Gravesites are also part of the historical record, and a family plot is a bit like a branch of a family tree. In this article you will learn about: * Family plots * Companion graves * Community gardens * Family estates * Mausoleums * Columbaria * Family headstones * Combining burial and cremation memorialization Find the right final resting place Explore your many options with The Buyer's Guide to Cemetery Property. DOWNLOAD NOW Family plots Groups of burial plots where many family members, sometimes spanning generations, can be buried alongside one another are called family plots. Families who choose family plots want to keep the family together, even after death. A family plot may simply be a few adjacent plots in a community garden, or those plots may be sectioned off by a hedge wall or gated for more privacy. Most family plots have room for at least four loved ones, but a larger family may want more space. Some accommodate as many as 16 or more. If you're contemplating a family plot, think about the future and discuss it with your parents, children, siblings and anyone else who might have an interest in staying together. It's helpful to try to determine how many family members want to be buried together and whether some would like to be cremated. Companion graves A companion gravesite is suited for two. Spouses, partners, even friends often choose companion graves to celebrate their time together in life and represent their enduring connection. Regardless of the nature of the relationship, companion graves honor the love shared between two people. Companion graves can be side-by-side or double-depth burial plots. The former are two adjacent plots; the latter is a single plot that allows for two caskets to be buried one on top of the other. Cemetery property for families All types of cemetery property are available to families. Here are a few to consider. Community gardens When you think of a cemetery, you likely think of community gardens, sweeping lawns dotted with headstones and shaded by trees or beautifully landscaped areas designed especially for cremation memorialization. Family plots are usually found in these gardens that welcome everyone. Family estates A family estate is a large area designed to suit a particular family. Usually more expensive than adjacent plots in a community garden, it's often in a premium area of the cemetery and may include a variety of memorialization types. Similarly, hedge estates are walled off by shrubs and other greenery. Mausoleums A family may be able to purchase several adjacent crypts in a community mausoleum, and some indoor mausoleums have whole rooms set aside for families. Companion and couch crypts allow a pair of caskets to be entombed together. A family who wants a more exclusive option may choose a custom private mausoleum. Columbaria If your family chooses cremation over traditional burial, you may prefer a columbarium. A columbarium may be a building full of glass-front niches or an outdoor structure comprising granite-front niches. You could choose single-urn niches in a group together or a companion niche that holds two urns. There's also the option of a private family columbarium for two, four, six or more loved ones. Headstones for family and companion plots A permanent memorial is a lasting connection to a loved one that provides comfort and solace as well as a place for future generations to learn more about those who came before them. Headstones help honor and preserve life stories. Very often, family plots and family estates have a central headstone or monument engraved with the family surname. A slab of polished granite or carved monument makes a stately impression and speaks to a family's legacy. Individual markers may be selected to honor family members and complement the family monument. Similarly, a couple who chooses a companion burial plot often also chooses a companion headstone, whether with an upright granite monument, flush bronze marker or another choice. They may also choose a companion headstone in addition to individual grave markers. Combining burial and cremation More and more people are choosing cremation, and it's possible for family members to make different choices and still be memorialized together. A burial plot may be used to bury urns, or a large headstone in a family estate may be modified with a base that offers multiple cremation niches. A cremation bench or private columbarium could be added to a hedge estate. There are always creative ways to address a family's cemetery wishes. Cemetery property and funeral planning It’s important to remember that choosing a cemetery plot is only one part of pre-planning. The cost savings and peace of mind that come with selecting and paying for a plot ahead of time also applies to funeral or cremation arrangements. Being fully planned means ensuring all these elements are in place. When you make final arrangements in advance, you have the luxury of time. You'll be able to carefully consider all your options and create a truly personalized service. Your loved ones won't have to worry about guessing your wishes or finding the money during a difficult, grief-filled moment. In addition, you’ll avoid future price increases on many items. A Dignity Memorial® associate can share more. Create a lasting legacy Many people don't realize the significance of choosing a final resting place. It is an important step in creating a family legacy, establishing a place of remembrance for future generations and paying tribute to a special life. Personalizing a Jewish Funeral

"Personalizing the Jewish Funeral | Jewish Traditions SKIP TO MAIN CONTENT Home Memorial Services Funeral Traditions Personalizing a Jewish Funeral Personalizing a Jewish Funeral At one time, nearly all Jewish funerals were planned according to traditional Jewish rituals and customs. However, as more Jewish people enter into interfaith marriages or begin to identify with Reform Judaism, it’s becoming common to reshape the boundaries of tradition when planning a funeral. If you’re interested in learning more about personalizing a Jewish funeral, Dignity Memorial® professionals are here to help. Jewish funeral traditions Although it’s become more accepted for some families to adopt less traditional Jewish customs, many Orthodox families still adhere to the rituals and customs of Jewish funerals. These practices are based on commands in the Torah, and they remain important among Orthodox and Conservative Jewish cultures. For example, according to Jewish tradition, a funeral and burial should take place as soon after death as possible, though exceptions are often made if a family must travel a long distance to attend the service. Jewish tradition calls for the ritual of tahara, when the deceased is washed and then dressed in a plain burial shroud. It also calls for the loved one to be buried in a plain wooden casket so that natural processes can take place. It is generally not acceptable to have an open casket at the funeral or for cremation to take place. After a funeral, it is common practice for a Jewish family to sit shiva for seven days. How to personalize a Jewish funeral Though many Jewish families still adhere to these funeral traditions, some Reform Jewish families customize funerals by adding details that celebrate the life of their loved ones in other ways. For example, they may dress their loved one in a favorite outfit rather than a burial shroud, or the family may choose to show a multimedia tribute of family photos and videos at the funeral service. When a Jewish person in an interfaith marriage dies, that person may be buried in a non-Jewish cemetery in order to be buried with his or her spouse. Metal caskets have also become more common, as have flowers (traditionally not present at Jewish services) and viewings. As with any funeral, personalizing a Jewish funeral is all about honoring a unique life in a unique way. Personalizing a Jewish funeral can be simple, such as giving attendees an opportunity to share memories and funny stories about their loved one. Other families may choose to provide attendees with a special memento, such as grandmother’s cookie recipe along with a half-dozen, fresh-baked cookies, or hold an outdoor event complete with a bonfire and s'mores for a loved one who enjoyed camping. It’s important that the funeral honors your loved one’s life and beliefs. For some families, that may mean strictly adhering to Jewish funeral customs. For others, adding personal touches—small or large—can bring added meaning to a service. Let our funeral professionals help The Dignity Memorial network of Jewish funeral providers understands the importance of keeping the Jewish faith and its traditions alive, as well as the balance between tradition and contemporary Jewish life. Imagine: A Memorial Inspiration Guide No two of us are alike, and each one of us deserves a memorial service that is a true reflection of our life. Whether planning for yourself in advance or for a loved one right now, we can help you arrange every aspect of a life celebration. When can you hold a celebration of life? That’s up to you. Families tell us that they love that the timing for a celebration of life is flexible and needn’t depend on a loved one’s burial or cremation. Though many celebrations take place right before or right after these events, others take place days, weeks or even months afterward. Even families who choose very traditional funeral services may opt to hold more celebratory gatherings afterward. When deciding when to hold a celebration of life, a family might consider factors like travel schedules, existing commitments, or significant cultural or community events that held meaning for their loved one. Whatever the decision, the date and time of a celebration can be planned to suit your family’s needs, and we’re available to plan a celebration shortly after a death or for any point in the future. A celebration of life brings people together to honor your loved one. With an emphasis on the good times, happy memories and joyous moments, a celebration of life brings friends and family together in an uplifting and supportive setting where conversation, laughter, hugs and tears are welcome. What Is a Funeral?

"What Is a Funeral? A funeral service, sometimes called a memorial service or a celebration of life, is a beautiful way to acknowledge, celebrate and honour the life of a loved one who has passed away. A funeral can bring comfort and peace to those who mourn and bring people together to share in the sorrow of loss and the joy of having known someone. There are many different ways to celebrate a life, and each can be tailored specifically to the individual being honoured, as well as their family. If a loved one has passed, you may have questions as to what kind of service to have. You may want to understand the difference between a traditional funeral and a memorial service. Or, you may want to pre-arrange your own service to ease the burden for your loved ones and to help make sure it reflects your unique life. What are the types of funerals? Maybe you aren’t sure what kind of funeral service you want to have, whether for you or a loved one. Services may include traditional funerals, wakes, visitations, memorial services and celebrations of life. Keep in mind that many people choose to include more than one of these events when remembering their loved one. It’s all about honouring the person through a unique service that fits their personality as well as what was important to them. Traditional funeral A traditional funeral is often presided over by an officiant of a church or a director of a funeral chapel. Traditional funerals tend to be formal in mood and are traditional in their program. Typically they include hymns or traditional songs, eulogies and readings—from poems and verses to favourite quotes. Funerals may be held at a funeral home or at a religious place, such as a church or temple. Often there is an open casket. However, funerals may be held with closed caskets or with an urn present, if cremation was chosen. Memorial service A funeral service without a casket or urn present is called a memorial service. It is similar to a traditional funeral, and honours the life of a loved one and can take place months or even a year after someone has passed away. Wake The atmosphere at a wake is typically less formal than at a traditional funeral. A wake may occur at a home or at a funeral chapel and can happen either in the days before or in place of a traditional funeral. Often, wakes are held in an “open house” format, allowing people to come and go within certain time frames, casually visiting, relaying memories and comforting one another. There may be food served and music played. The casket or urn may or may not be present. Visitation A visitation (sometimes also called a viewing) is an opportunity for the family of a loved one to receive visitors and spend some time talking with and being comforted by friends. This is also a time to pay respects to a loved one and gives a sense of closure to both family and friends. Visitations often have an open casket. Many times, a visitation period occurs the day before a funeral and again immediately preceding a funeral service. Celebration of life “Celebration of life” is a term used to describe a personalized funeral or memorial service, which is oftentimes more celebratory in nature than it is somber and formal. Celebration of life services include personal touches celebrating the unique aspects and personality of the individual being honoured. These services can be as traditional or non-traditional as a family desires, from a funeral service with special photos displayed to a beachside barbecue where friends and family gather in a place loved by the person being celebrated. How do I plan a funeral? Remember, you can combine different types of services. For example, families may choose a wake or visitation to receive friends and the community to offer condolences, then a more intimate gathering of close friends and family to celebrate their loved one's life in a more unique way—a celebration of life. It’s about choosing a service, or combination of services, that fits your loved one’s wishes. Once you have settled on a style for the funeral you are planning, you may be wondering how to organize and execute the service. Dignity Memorial® professionals are here to help. We start by compassionately asking about your loved one—their passions, interests and personality. Then, we offer a helping hand to plan the details.
