Merced County Housing Plan Approved Through 2032
The California Department of Housing and Community Development approved Merced County's 2024-2032 Housing Element, clearing the way for state and federal funding for housing and infrastructure projects.
The county Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the plan on May 19, 2026. The Housing Element identifies housing needs across all income levels and demonstrates the county has sufficient zoned capacity to meet state-mandated targets.
"This approval reflects the work of county staff, community partners, and residents who participated in the planning process," Board Chairman Daron McDaniel said. "As our county continues to grow, we need to plan for housing that meets the needs of current and future residents."
State law requires counties to update housing elements every eight years. The approval makes Merced County eligible for grants that support housing, infrastructure, and community development.
County Executive Officer Mark J. Hendrickson said the certification strengthens the county's chances of securing grant funding to invest in housing and community projects.
County staff will monitor and report on the housing element's programs and policies as the population grows. Information is available through the Community and Economic Development Department on the county website.
