Dangerous Rip Currents Expected: Avoid Lake & Ashtabula Waters

Residents and visitors in Lake and Ashtabula Counties are advised to remain out of Lake Erie waters due to a high risk of dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service (NWS) Cleveland OH has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective immediately, September 22, 2026, at 9:15 PM EDT, and extending until Wednesday evening, September 23, 2026, at 10:00 PM EDT.

The NWS warns that wind and wave action will create strong currents along the lakeshore. Swimmers should not enter the water. These currents can quickly carry individuals away from shore, through sandbars, and along structures that extend into the lake.

To ensure safety, the NWS urges everyone to avoid entering the water during this period of hazardous swimming conditions. This advisory specifically impacts the lakeshores of Lake and Ashtabula Counties.
