New Voter Registration Law in Effect March 26, 2026
NEW VOTER REGISTRATION LAW Under the new law (SB 175), individuals registering to vote for the very first time in South Dakota must provide documentary proof of citizenship. Proof of citizenship can be any of the following documents: A SD driver license or ID card that was issued after July 1, 2025, with citizenship status on the back of the document A valid out of state license or identification card issued by any other state or territory of the United States, provided it indicates he/she is a US citizen A tribal identification card from one of the 9 federally recognized tribes of this state OR;Photocopy of birth certificate; a United States Passport; a consular report of birth abroad issued by the United States Department of State; or a certificate of naturalization.
