Front page of the Martinsburg Pioneer Press, the first African-American newspaper in West Virginia, from July 7, 1917. Left two columns are devoted to the white supremacist riots in East St. Louis, Illinois. The newspaper was published by J.R. Clifford (1848–1933), who was also the state's first African-American attorney.
