Dense Fog Advisory Issued for Region: Drive with Caution

Drivers in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and surrounding counties should exercise extreme caution this morning due to localized dense fog. The National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore MD/Washington DC issued a Special Weather Statement at 2:17 AM EDT on October 5, 2026, warning of patchy dense fog with visibility dropping below one-quarter of a mile.

This advisory is in effect until 7:00 AM UTC (3:00 AM EDT) on October 5, 2026. Sudden drops in visibility are expected, making travel hazardous.

The affected areas include:

  • Maryland: Patapsco River including Baltimore Harbor, District of Columbia, Washington, Frederick, Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, Southern Baltimore, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Central and Eastern Allegany, Northwest Montgomery, Central and Southeast Montgomery, Northwest Howard, Central and Southeast Howard, Northwest Harford, Southeast Harford.
  • Virginia: Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Clarke, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fairfax, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Stafford, King George, Northern Fauquier, Southern Fauquier, Western Loudoun, Eastern Loudoun, Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Northwest Prince William, Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park.
  • West Virginia: Hampshire, Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Hardy, Eastern Mineral.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed, allow extra travel time and following distance, and use low beam headlights. The NWS emphasizes that the fog is patchy, meaning conditions can change rapidly.
