The 911 Communications Unit serving Stuart and Martin County is integrating new technology to improve emergency response times and situational awareness for first responders. The unit, overseen by Communications Manager/911 Coordinator Jessica Skowronski and Assistant Manager Kelli Pfeifle, is preparing to implement live video feed capabilities into its Next Generation 911 network.
This upgrade will allow the center to receive real-time visual information from callers during emergencies. Officials state this cutting-edge technology will provide invaluable situational awareness, enabling the dispatch team to assess situations more accurately, direct resources more effectively, and better coordinate with emergency responders in the field.
The 911 Communications Unit is staffed by 32 professional Public Safety Telecommunicators (PSTs) who serve as the critical link between individuals in distress and emergency response teams. These telecommunicators are responsible for gathering essential information, providing calm guidance, and dispatching the appropriate help. All Florida PSTs must be state-certified through the Florida Department of Health. PSTs employed by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office undergo 232 hours of training, must pass a state exam, and complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years.
Between October 2023 and September 2024, the PSTs handled a total of 229,651 calls. The source material highlights the demanding nature of the job, noting that PSTs are considered essential personnel who must remain on duty during natural disasters and maintain required staffing levels. Their work requires the ability to handle numerous tasks simultaneously and is instrumental in providing information that aids in the apprehension of criminals daily.
The center is already equipped with a Next Generation 911 network, which supports both voice and text calls to 911. The upcoming integration of live video represents a significant step forward in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency services for the citizens of Martin County.
