Wind Advisory: Prepare for Gusts Up To 60 MPH Through Sunday Morning
A Wind Advisory is in effect for multiple Western North Carolina counties until Sunday morning, with gusts up to 60 mph expected, potentially causing power outages and difficult travel.
Residents in Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties should prepare for strong winds. A Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC, effective until 8:00 AM EDT Sunday, October 11.
For elevations above 3500 feet, a High Wind Warning is in effect with southeast winds of 10 to 25 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. For areas below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect with southeast winds of 5 to 20 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.
The NWS reports that damaging winds are expected to blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations, with widespread power outages anticipated. Travel may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. In lower elevations, gusty winds could cause unsecured objects to move and lead to falling tree limbs and isolated power outages.
During the windstorm, residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. If driving is necessary, use caution, as strong winds can make it difficult to control high-profile vehicles. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
