High Wind Warning: Damaging Winds & Power Outages Expected Until Sunday
A High Wind Warning is in effect for multiple Western North Carolina counties until Sunday 8:00 AM EDT, with damaging winds and widespread power outages expected.
A High Wind Warning has been issued for Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties, effective immediately until Sunday at 8:00 AM EDT.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg SC reports that high elevations above 3500 feet will experience southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Lower elevations below 3500 feet are under a Wind Advisory, with southeast winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts of 45 to 50 mph expected.
Damaging winds are anticipated to blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. In lower elevations, gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects and cause isolated power outages from falling tree limbs.
Residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if driving, especially for high-profile vehicles. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
