Residents across Central Alabama should finalize storm preparations as a Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for numerous counties, including Pickens. The National Weather Service in Birmingham issued this alert today, October 8, at 1:07 PM CDT, with Hurricane Isaias expected to make landfall Friday evening on the Northern Gulf Coast.

Counties under the Tropical Storm Watch include Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Tuscaloosa. Expect wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph Friday night through Saturday, with isolated gusts up to 60 mph, potentially causing downed trees and power lines. Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts up to 5 inches, could lead to flash flooding. An isolated tornado threat is also possible Saturday, especially east of Interstate 65.

Check emergency plans and supply kits. If in vulnerable locations, such as mobile homes or low-lying areas, plan to move to safe shelter. Monitor official updates from weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The next local statement is expected around 4 PM CDT.
