Maitland Sandspur Road Closure & Rebuild | Late June
Maitland will close Sandspur Road from west of Bucher Road to Hope Road for up to five weeks beginning in late June. The Public Works Department will rebuild the roadway and south sidewalk, addressing damage from vehicle traffic, weather, and tree roots that have lifted asphalt, concrete curbs, and pavement.
Single-lane closures will also occur on Sandspur Road west toward Wymore Road. Traffic will detour north to Maitland Boulevard or south to East Kennedy Boulevard and Lake Avenue. Residents on the south side of the closure will access their neighborhood via North Lake Sybelia Drive.
Before construction begins, the city will remove trees from public right-of-way areas where roots have created safety hazards for pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders. The trees were planted in spaces too confined for their mature sizes, or are aged or diseased. After road work concludes, smaller tree varieties will be replanted. Most existing trees along the corridor will remain.
The Public Works Department scheduled the project for summer to minimize disruption to Lake Sybelia Elementary School and Orangewood Christian School. The department will coordinate with Lake Sybelia Elementary to maintain access for a family summer program. Work should conclude by August, before the school year begins.
