Learn about Florida’s Coral Reefs

The five counties bordering the reefs are home to over 6 million people. South Florida’s economy and way of life are inextricably linked to the coral reef ecosystem. The reefs provide habitat for species that are valuable to commercial and recreational fisheries, serve as a new frontier for biomedical research, attract tourists who bolster our economy, and protect our coastlines from storms and flooding. The Coral Reef Conservation Program manages the northern section of the reef, from the St. Lucie Inlet to the northern border of Biscayne National Park known as the Kristin Jacobs Coral Aquatic Preserve. These reefs support a rich and diverse assemblage of stony corals, octocorals, macroalgae, sponges and fishes. The Coral Reef Conservation Program coordinates research and monitoring, develops management strategies and promotes partnerships to protect the coral reefs, hardbottom communities and associated reef resources along Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties. Through its role in supporting Florida's membership on the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force and the U.S. All Islands Committee, the Coral Reef Conservation Program leads the implementation of the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative and contributes to the National Action Plan to conserve coral reefs. The Coral Reef Conservation Program is also charged with coordinating response to vessel groundings and anchor damage incidents in southeast Florida and developing strategies to prevent coral reef injuries. Why are living corals valuable? Coral reefs are incredible natural resources that support the economy while providing opportunities for recreation, education, scientific research and public inspiration. The fish we catch rely on corals to build the reef structure where they can breed and grow. Current medicines that combat cancer, pain and inflammation have also been derived from coral reef organisms. The total tourism value of Florida's Coral Reef is estimated at $1.1 billion annually. Coral reefs are estimated to annually support 71,000 jobs in South Florida. Healthy and resilient coral reefs safeguard against extreme weather, shoreline erosion and coastal flooding. Florida’s Coral Reef provides more than $355 million/year in flood protection benefits to buildings and protects nearly $320 million in annual economic activity (Storlazzi et al. 2019). After completing this process, a confirmation email with a PDF attachment of your license(s) will be sent to the login email and email attached to the operator's profile in our database. For more detailed scheduling information, please review the candidate handbook located on the PSI website. California State University Sacramento (CSUS) Course Updates The CSUS Office of Water Programs has updated their program offerings for wastewater. CSUS is no longer offering the Advanced Waste Treatment course, which was an Approved Exam Course for the Wastewater Class B examination. The new Approved Exam Course for the Wastewater Class B Examination provided by CSUS is titled Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants, Vol 3. This course includes 2 enrollments, A and B. General Education Development (GED) Acceptance DEP's Operator Certification Program accepts only GED issued by the American Council on Education through an approved GED administrator. In Florida, the approved GED administrator is the Florida Department of Education through its network of public schools and adult education centers. (Note: Depending on your location, some testing centers are paper- or computer-based. Enter your ZIP code under Testing Center Information.) The Caring Family Foundation

The Caring Family Foundation Donate Now Food From The Heart ‘We have a fundamental belief that no child should go hungry and together we can make a difference, one meal at a time.’ Richard & Patricia Caring Over two and a half million children in the UK face food poverty each month, a rise of 27% since before COVID-19 struck. Meanwhile millions are struggling with debt, with more than 1.5 million adults in Britain reporting they can’t buy enough food. Working in partnership with established charities FareShare and The Felix Project, our Food From The Heart campaign, provides nutritious, balanced meals for children and their families who are struggling to provide the next meal. In the coming year, The Caring Family Foundation will ensure 6,000 children receive meals for every day of the school holidays, ensuring greater food security, while also working to help alleviate the shame and stigma from those struggling to afford food. In Brazil, where 60% of children live in poverty, the Foundation has an immediate focus on São Paulo, where 58 million people live with food insecurity. In 2020, the Caring Family Foundation launched two campaigns, One Million and One Meals and Food From The Heart delivering 1.14 million meals nationally to NHS workers and children living in food poverty in the UK. Another 1 million + meals are committed across the UK and Brazil in 2022, with 6,000 children receiving meals for every day of the school holidays. Find out more.
