Maitland faces a potential 16 percent reduction in its ad valorem property tax revenue over the next two years if Florida Constitutional Amendment 3 passes on November 3. This amendment, if approved by 60 percent of voters, would significantly expand property tax exemptions for homeowners.
The proposed amendment would increase the non-school property tax exemption from $25,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and further to $250,000 in 2028. These expanded exemptions would apply to eligible homeowners who meet minimum length of residency requirements. City officials estimate that approximately 1,700 residential properties within Maitland could fall below the taxable threshold as a result.
Ad valorem property taxes are a critical component of the City of Maitland’s general revenue budget. These funds support essential city services, including administration, public works, community development, and, notably, police and fire services. More than half of Maitland’s current general fund budget is allocated to police and fire departments.
A reduction in these tax revenues would directly decrease the total funds available for City operations. The City of Maitland has not taken a position to support or oppose this ballot measure, providing this summary for informational purposes only.
Voters will make their decision on Florida Constitutional Amendment 3 on November 3.
