Tropical Storm Watch Issued for West-Central GA Ahead of Hurricane Isaias
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for West-Central Georgia as Hurricane Isaias approaches, bringing threats of strong winds, heavy rain, and tornadoes from Friday night through Sunday.
A Tropical Cyclone Local Statement has been issued for a wide area of North and Central Georgia, including a Tropical Storm Watch for Chattahoochee, Harris, Heard, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, and Webster counties. Residents in these areas should prepare for potential strong winds of 40 to 50 mph.
Hurricane Isaias, currently strengthening in the Gulf with 105 mph winds, is expected to bring widespread impacts to North and Central Georgia from Friday night through Sunday. This includes a prolonged period of strong, gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for several tornadoes. A High Wind Watch and a Flood Watch are in effect for the entire area.
Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are likely, with localized amounts up to 5 inches, which could lead to flash flooding. Tornadoes are possible, particularly within outer rainbands, and can develop quickly, even overnight. Prepare for potential power outages due to downed trees and limbs, especially with saturated soils.
The National Weather Service advises residents to finalize emergency plans and secure properties. Do not focus on the exact storm track as hazards extend well beyond the center. Have multiple ways to receive Tornado Warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Stay informed by monitoring weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The next update is expected around 2 AM EDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
