Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Lowndes County: Prepare for Winds and Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lowndes County by the NWS, warning of hazardous winds up to 40 mph and potential moderate flooding, requiring immediate preparations.
LOWNDES COUNTY – Residents of Lowndes County should immediately prepare for hazardous wind conditions and potential moderate flooding, as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, issued the watch today, October 9, at 10:02 AM CDT, effective until 6:15 PM CDT.
Winds are forecast to reach 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Property protection efforts should now be underway. Residents are advised to secure loose objects such as porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes to prevent limited damage. Expect scattered power and communication outages, and be aware that some roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly in heavily wooded areas.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and localized higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, potentially requiring evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and floodwaters could impact structures. Drivers should be aware of hazardous conditions and possible road closures, especially at underpasses and low-lying areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time, but showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed for any changes in the forecast.
