LOWNDES COUNTY, MS – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Lowndes County, effective October 9, 2026, at 4:09 AM CDT. This means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. The watch is set to expire on October 9, 2026, at 12:15 PM CDT, but potential impacts could extend beyond this timeframe.

Residents should prepare for hazardous winds with speeds of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph, potentially reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break, and some roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly in urban or heavily wooded areas. Scattered power and communications outages are also possible. All efforts to protect property should be underway immediately. Act now to complete preparations before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Lowndes County could see 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, leading to moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams and creeks could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures and foundations could be weakened. Driving conditions will become hazardous due to flooded roads and underpasses. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS Jackson MS. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed of the latest forecast.
