Strong Storm Near Starkville: Seek Shelter, Expect 40 MPH Winds

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for parts of Clay, Lowndes, and Oktibbeha counties, advising residents to seek shelter indoors due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service in Jackson, MS, issued the alert at 8:31 PM CDT, effective immediately until 9:30 PM CDT tonight.

At 8:30 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm near Starkville, moving east at 15 mph. The primary hazards associated with this storm include wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch hail. Gusty winds could potentially knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured outdoor objects. Minor damage to vegetation from hail is also possible.

The storm's anticipated path includes:

  • Starkville around 8:35 PM CDT
  • Muldrow and Sessums around 8:40 PM CDT
  • Artesia around 8:55 PM CDT
  • Tibbee around 9:00 PM CDT

If you are outdoors in these areas, consider immediately seeking shelter inside a sturdy building until the storm passes.
